Why 'The KiteSurfer Guy'?
So how did I become known as the kite surfer guy? Let me start by saying that I am not ‘the’ kite surfer guy, but just a humble surfer on the journey of mastering the multiple aspects of this sport. In my previous life I was a professional tennis coach. I coached and ran clinics throughout Vancouver and Canada. I would run into people and they would recognize me as ‘the tennis guy’ because they didn’t remember my name but knew I was involved in the tennis community, working with players, at tournaments, etc.
These days people see me on the beaches where I kitesurf and they say ‘you’re that kitesurfer guy’ – I could be called worse so I’ll take it!
I don’t claim to be the expert but I have over 11 years of experience, and in a past life, was an experienced windsurfer. I constantly look to the real pioneers and masters of this sport for inspiration, technical wisdom and innovation. I look for ways to be as good as they are, improving my skill and mastery.
Kiting is my passion and I want to share my experience with others so that they too may experience the pure joy of riding a wave, boosting air or quietly foiling a high speeds over the water.
Total strangers will come up to me and start asking me questions about how difficult kitesurfing or foiling must be or ask ‘what does it cost’ or sometimes even say ‘dude what you did out there on the waves today was awesome!’
This website is for those looking to start kitesurfing no matter what age. Many posts will be geared to those more older kiters (over 60) because that’s me, and life and kitesurfing is a little different at 60 then at 20! Regardless I hope everyone can find something that will inspire and motivate them to get into kitesurfing or raise their skill level to get more enjoyment out of this sport.
The first time I saw a kitesurfer sailing in Del Mar, I had a moment of clarity. I knew I had just witnessed the coolest sport ever and knew immediately this is what I would be doing for years to come. I am eternally grateful to those who have preceded me in this sport and given me the opportunity to find develop my passion.
